Yankuba Jallow is New Narratives’ Justice Correspondent in The Gambia. He covers all aspects of The Gambia’s transitional justice process including the establishment of a hybrid court and the implementation of other recommendations of the country’s Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission. Yankuba is a law student and an editor at Foroyaa Newspaper in the Gambia, established in 1987.
He began his journalism career as a court reporter under the regime of dictator Yahya Jammeh. Since then, he has established himself as a standout court reporter. Jallow’s consistency earned him promotion to the position of an editor at Foroyaa. Jallow continues to cover the courts and provide information about judicial matters.
Yankuba’s legal training has given him a deep understanding of The Gambia’s legal system, including the courts and their processes. This has been an asset has The Gambia embarks on a process of transitional justice to hold those responsible for serious human rights violations in the country to account and bring justice to victims.
Yankuba was elected the president of the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG). He has also won best legal and court reporter in 2023 by the National Journalism Awards organised under the auspices of the Gambia Press Union. He also won the 2022 and 2024 business and finance reporting categories from the same body.
