2012 Annual Luncheon

JEFFREY SACHS HONORED BY U.N. JOURNALISTS

The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists honored Dr. Jeffrey Sachs with their Inspiration Award at their annual luncheon. Dr. Sachs is Director of The Earth Institute (http://www.earth.columbia.edu), Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University.  The event was held on Tuesday, November 13, in the Delegates Dining Room at the United Nations.

The Inspiration Award is awarded each year by the Fund to further perpetuate Hammarskjöld’s legacy by recognizing individuals who exemplify his vision of peace and reflect his resolute approach to solving issues of global concern.

‘We are honoring Dr. Sachs for his significant accomplishments as a world-renowned economist, leader in sustainable development, and one of the world’s leading experts on economic development and the fight against poverty,” said Evelyn Leopold, chair of the Fund. His work on ending poverty, promoting economic growth, fighting hunger and disease, and promoting sustainable environmental practices has taken him to more than 125 countries with more than 90 percent of the world’s population.

Dr. Sachs is Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Millennium Development Goals, having held the same position under former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He is co-founder and Chief Strategist of Millennium Promise Alliance, and is director of the Millennium Villages Project. He has authored three New York Times bestsellers in the past seven years: The End of Poverty (2005), Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet (2008), and The Price of Civilization (2011).

He has received many awards and honors, including membership in the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Society of Fellows, and the Fellows of the World Econometric Society. He has received more than 20 honorary degrees, and many awards and honors around the world. To learn more about Dr. Sachs, please click here

The Fund brings journalists from developing nations to New York each autumn to cover the United Nations General Assembly. It is managed on a voluntary basis by U.N.-based correspondents, who raise funds to support it. Initiated in 1962, the Fund was established as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjöld, the second U.N. secretary-general, killed in a plane crash in September 1961. The 2012 fellowship recipients came from Argentina, Liberia, Sri Lanka and Tunisia. To learn more about the 2012 fellowship recipients, click here.
