About New Narratives
New Narratives is a media development organization that supports leading journalists and media outlets in resource poor settings to produce impactful, independent journalism that drives social change. We provide financial and editorial support, training, and mentoring with a strong focus on investigative, explanatory and solutions journalism, particularly in underreported areas such as climate change, environment, transitional justice, gender justice, governance, and public health.
Position Summary
New Narratives is seeking an experienced Consulting Editor to work with our network of reporters and media partners across Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, and The Gambia. The editor will provide editorial support, mentoring, and strategic guidance to strengthen high-impact investigative, solutions, and explanatory journalism for print, radio, digital, and television.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide editorial guidance and mentoring to journalists in the NN West Africa network.
- Edit investigative and feature stories for clarity, structure, accuracy, and impact.
- Coordinate with newsroom editors to ensure editorial alignment.
- Support the design and delivery of journalism training workshops.
- Identify and pitch regional and international publication opportunities.
- Contribute to editorial planning, monitoring, and impact reporting.
Qualifications
- At least 8 years of experience in newsrooms with high standards of independent, objective, ethical journalism and fact checking.
- Extensive experience finding, verify, and synthesize large volumes of information from public records, data, and interviews.
- Evidence of journalism that scrutinizes every detail; verifying claims through multiple, independent sources.
- Proven experience as an editor or senior reporter with focus on building audience trust through honest, transparent journalism.
- Evidence of building trust with sources, including whistleblowers, and asking probing, thoughtful questions.
- Demonstrated understanding of people-centered storytelling.
- Experience working with or training journalists in low-resource settings preferred.
- Deep knowledge of the media and geopolitical landscape in West Africa.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Experience with audio/video content editing is an asset.
- Flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and a collaborative spirit.
Remuneration
This is a consultant role. Competitive fee based on experience and qualifications.
