Job Alert: Justice Correspondent, The Gambia


Job Location: Banjul, The Gambia

Time: 3 days a week, ongoing

Remuneration: This is a part time position with a FTE (full time equivalent) salary in the range of $1000 to $1200 a month (depending on experience) plus benefits.

As The Gambia undertakes the groundbreaking process to hold perpetrators of human rights violations to account, New Narratives seeks to recruit an experienced journalist to cover The Gambia’s transitional justice process for newsmedia inside The Gambia and for NN’s partners in the West African region.

Principal Responsibilities:

The Justice Correspondent will provide full coverage of The Gambia’s transitional justice process with regular news stories, interviews and features. The Correspondent will also produce radio and television interviews that will run on audio and video platforms, as well as a standalone podcast.

The correspondent will also travel to the U.S. and/or Europe to provide daily coverage of universal jurisdiction trials of accused Gambian perpetrators. The correspondent will also be eligible for NN-sponsored travel and training opportunities. 

The correspondent will work closely with NN’s Editor-in-Chief to build journalism, production skills and knowledge of transitional justice processes.

The correspondent will also lead training and mentoring of Gambian journalists at workshops and other capacity building activities.

The correspondent will also be required to undertake some project management and finance related duties.

Jobholder Requirements – the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours required

Knowledge (Education & Related Experience):

  • 3+ years as a journalist with leading independent newsroom/s
  • A strong track record of independent, ethical journalism that seeks to find the truth
  • Good contacts with major newsmedia in The Gambia and government and justice stakeholders
  • Be hard working, diligent and pay strong attention to details
  • Be willing to go the extra mile to track down the truth
  • Be willing to ask tough questions of leadership
  • Be open to learning and building their journalism skills 
  • Be willing to meet the highest ethical standards of journalism
  • Be a team player, capable of working independently and remote from the rest of the team
  • Knowledge of transitional justice issues is a plus, but not essential
  • Knowledge of radio and video production is a plus, but not essential
