Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced audience engagement editor to support colleagues who are just starting on the journey to better understand and engage audiences to grow financial sustainability. The Audience Engagement Editor/Mentor will work closely with Front Page Africa and New Narratives’ leadership and a local engagement editor to lead strategies to deepen relationships with our audiences, grow our audience, and expand the reach and impact of our journalism. This role will also help Front Page Africa monetize our journalism to build long term sustainability. This role is critical in ensuring our reporting resonates with and serves the communities we aim to reach. You will develop innovative approaches to engaging our audience, whether through social media, newsletters, events, or interactive storytelling. You will train and mentor the local engagement editor to continue the work.

As a key member of the editorial team, the Audience Engagement Editor/Mentor will collaborate closely with the local engagement editor, reporters, editors, and multimedia specialists to ensure our content is accessible, inclusive, and impactful.

Key Responsibilities

Audience Growth & Strategy:

     • Develop and execute strategies to expand and diversify our audience across platforms.

     • Monitor analytics to assess audience behavior, engagement, and growth.

     • Identify and pursue opportunities to connect with underserved and niche communities.

     • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow our revenue through donations, membership programs, sponsorships and others.

Engagement & Community Building:

     • Manage and grow our presence on social media platforms, ensuring meaningful interaction with followers.

     • Design and execute campaigns that invite audience participation in reporting processes, surveys, or feedback.

     • Plan and coordinate events, live Q&A sessions, and other community engagement initiatives.

Content Creation & Optimization:

     • Collaborate with the editorial team to craft compelling headlines, teasers, and social media posts.

     • Develop and manage newsletters, ensuring they deliver value and drive engagement.

     • Experiment with new formats and platforms (e.g., TikTok, Facebook, podcasts) to reach audiences where they are.

Analytics & Insights:

     • Track performance metrics (e.g., website traffic, social shares, email open rates) and adjust strategies accordingly.

     • Provide regular reports to the team on audience insights and recommendations for improvement.

Collaboration & Training:

     • Serve as a resource for newsroom staff on best practices for audience engagement and digital outreach.

     • Partner with reporters to ensure coverage aligns with audience interests and needs.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience:

                  • Proven experience in audience engagement, social media management, or digital marketing, preferably in a newsroom or nonprofit environment.

                  • Strong understanding of digital platforms, analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Chartbeat), and content management systems.

                  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.

                  • A creative, strategic mindset with a track record of building and sustaining audience growth.

                  • Deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a sensitivity to serving diverse communities.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

                  • Familiarity with email marketing tools (e.g., Mailchimp, Substack) and social media scheduling platforms (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer).

                  • Experience hosting events or moderating community discussions.

                  • Knowledge of SEO and best practices for web content optimization.
