New Narratives Liberia is recruiting a Board Treasurer

The Treasurer of the Board of Directors (the “Board Treasurer”) is an independent member of the Board of Directors (the “board”), elected annually by the Board of Directors. The Board Treasurer serves at the pleasure of the board.

Position Summary

As a partner to the board chair, other board members, and executive director, the Board Treasurer will provide leadership to New Narratives Liberia Inc., support and sustain the work of organization, and provide governance and strategic fundraising support. The Board Treasurer shall hold office until he or she resigns, is removed, or becomes otherwise disqualified to serve, or until his or her successor is elected and qualified.

The Board Treasurer ensures that New Narratives Liberia Inc. keeps and maintains adequate and correct amounts of the properties and business transactions of the corporation. The Board Treasurer chairs the finance committee of the board, which assists the board in its oversight responsibilities relating to fiscal management. The Board Treasurer attends meetings of the board and shall exercise and perform other powers and duties as may be from time to time assigned to him or her by the Board or prescribed by New Narratives’ Liberia Inc. bylaws.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Understand financial accounting for nonprofit organizations;
  • Serve as the chair of the finance committee;
  • Manage, with the finance committee, the board’s review of and action related to the board’s financial responsibilities;
  • Work with the Executive Director and the Director of Finance and Administration to ensure that appropriate financial reports are made available to the board on a timely basis;
  • Present the annual budget to the board for approval;
  • Review the annual audit and answer board members’ questions about the audit;
  • Ensure development and board review of financial policies and procedures;
  • Review financial supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings;
  • Partner with other board members and the Executive Director to ensure that board resolutions are carried out;
  • Serve on board committees or task forces and take on special assignments as necessary;
  • Stay informed of and meet all legal and fiduciary responsibilities; 
  • Assist the board chair and the executive director to identify, actively recruit, solicit, evaluate, and select candidates for membership to the Board.

Board terms

New Narratives’ Liberia Inc. Board Treasurer is elected annually by the Board of Directors to serve in this role. The Board Treasurer and other board members serve for a two-year term on the board and are eligible for re-appointment to the Board for two additional terms.

Qualifications

This is an opportunity for an individual to serve a growing nonprofit that plays an important role in empowering Liberia’s media to play its role in democracy, improving the information ecosystem and holding leadership to account. The Board Treasurer will have ideally extensive experience in financial management in the nonprofit sector.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector in Liberia; and
  • A strong understand of financial accounting for nonprofit organizations;
  • Extensive experience with Quickbooks accounting software.

Time commitment: 4 hours per quarter, ahead of board meetings, paid at US$50 an hour.
