Defense Lawyers Claim Statute of Limitations Means Rebel Cannot be Tried For 1993 War Crimes

Defense lawyers representing former Liberian rebel commander, Kunti Kamara, are claiming that the statute of limitations means Kamara cannot be tried for 1993 War Crimes.

According to them, it has been more than ten years from the time the crimes for which Kamara is accused were committed in Liberia, arguing, that it should be heard under Liberia’s judicial system.

This is the second challenge Marilyn Secci, Kamara’s lead defense lawyer, has put forward in this hearing. She also put forward an argument that Kamara was only 15 when the crimes took place and said, therefore, the case should be heard in the juvenile justice system and not the adult one.

New Narratives senior reporter, Evelyn Kpadeh Seagbeh has been covering Kamara’s appeal. She brings us an update.
